Chavez tries to extend term limits

Hugo Chavez has said that he is directing his United Socialist party (PSUV) to seek a constitutional amendment that would allow him to be re-elected an unlimted number of times.

The Venezuelan president said in Caracas on Sunday that he wanted to rule the oil-rich South American country until 2021 to work on his vision of a socialist economy.

"I give the PSUV and the Venezuelan people my authorization to begin the debate and take the steps necessary to obtain that constitutional amendment and re-election of the president ... and I am sure that we will get it now," he said at the swearing in of Jorge Rodriguez, Caracas' Libertador district's mayor.

"I am ready, and if I am healthy, God willing, I will be with you until 2019, until 2021," said the 54-year-old.

Second attempt

In 2007 Chavez lost a referendum on changing the constitution to abolish term limits.

He is not allowed to put the bill forward again. However, others can propose it for him - but the change must be approved by a nationwide referendum.

"Last year, when we lost the referendum, I said I should accept the majority's decision,'' Chavez said at the rally.

But now, he added, "I say you were right: Chavez will not go.''

The proposal will be divisive, with Chavez's opponents claiming that he wants to be president for life.

Gerardo Blyde, the opposition leader, said that the revived idea would not be popular.

"It's going to be an uphill battle for him,'' said Blyde, who suggested that the president is losing support due to high levels of inflation, crime and collapsing infrastructure.

Chavez has been president for almost 10 years over two terms. His current term - which is legally his last - ends in 2013.

extend term limits
If Venezuelans think that Cubans lead good lives, they should definitely vote to remove term limits.

how dictators are made
Here is how dictators are made ,first they ask for the constitution to be changed ,so that they may remain in power, so as to help the people and the country. However this is where the problem comes in ,even if the president who asks for this change may be a good and worthy man, when he passes on as all do in time his replacement may not be good or worthy, but he will have the constitutional law on his side. And sooner or later you will have a dictator. Be advised!

On Hugo
What could be better for Venezuala than a weakened electorate and a leader by fiat in 2013? The act of a strong electorate to vacate the Venezualian presidency early.

About the nation
Opposition in last national elections on November 23rd won in 5 of the 22 states and the Caracas area. Even though it was not many states , this are the states where the majority of the people live. The biggest cities which have been well affected by crime, unemployment and a large economic crisis. People have voted. The only thing he has done is create separation and hate between sides. Chavez will lose because he will not make Venezuela another Cuba.
