Many killed in Sri Lanka blast

The suicide attack took place as an opposition party opened new offfices in the town [AFP]

At least 27 people have been killed and about 80 wounded in a suspected suicide bomb attack in a north-central Sri Lankan town, police say.

Janaka Perera, a former general who became an opposition leader, was among those killed in the explosion on Monday outside the newly opened offices of the United National Party in Anuradhapura.

Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara, a military spokesman, blamed the blast on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), which has been fighting for an independent homeland for ethnic Tamils for four decades.

"The LTTE set off a suicide explosion. There are large number of casualties," he said.

"He [Perera] was a retired general who had fought the LTTE, and because of that they may have targeted him," Nanayakkara told Al Jazeera.

Suicide attacks

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the Tamil Tigers are known to have previously carried out many suicide attacks.

Last month Perera unsuccessfully ran for the position of North-Central Province's chief minister.

Al Jazeera's Tony Birtley, reporting from Colombo, said that the former general was a high-profile figure with enemies on boths sides in the conflict.

"He was disliked by some because he criticised the army's handling of the war a few years ago, but also he was hated and loathed by the LTTE; they held him responsible for a number of human rights abuses against Tamils," he said.

The United National Party accused the government of ignoring repeated requests for a stronger security detail for Perera.

"The government must take full responsibility. They did not give him adequate security for political reasons," Tissa Attanayake, a party offficial, said.

Military offensive

Sri Lanka's military has been involved in a major offensive against the LTTE in the north of the island for more than a year, in an attempt to defeat the group.

The army chief of staff on Sunday urged all Tamil Tiger fighters to lay down their arms as his troops were within a few kilometres of Kilinochchi, the de facto capital of the LTTE.

"There is a great deal of confidence in the military, they say now that it is the beginning of the end for the Tamil Tigers, but we do have the rainy season coming and that will slow them considerably," Al Jazeera's Birtley said.

"Although we have had considerable progress up to now, going on from here is going to be tougher ... by their own estimation there is something like 4,000 highly trained LTTE fighters left on the other side ... they are not going to give up without a fight."

Perera's United National Party officially supports a negotiated settlement with the Tigers and says the current offensive is being used by the government for political ends.

It was in government in February 2002 when a Norwegian-brokered peace process, which finally collapsed earlier this year, was agreed

In a separate attack overnight, a roadside bomb killed two civilians and wounded another on a remote road in the Anuradhapura district, according to Sri Lanka's military.

Mahinda Rajapakse, Sri Lankan president, said the Tamil Tigers were "making every attempt to create violent backlashes" after suffering a series of setbacks.

Anuradhapura is a popular tourist location and home to some of Sri Lankan Buddhism's holiest sites, but it also has a number of military sites used to supply the offensive in the north.

The LTTE is the worse thing that ever happen to the innocent tamil community, the LTTE have stripped off the civil rights of the tamil community, you live in canada and applaude this heinous group of terrorist who are using innocent civilians to achieve meaningless goals that will never be attained, their is no way out, but first lay down your arms, it will bring you a productive solution, governments honour and respect its citizens and always stand by its citizens, its time you understand this.

yesterday bomb blast
According to my view this attack carried out by member of Pillayan's gang who hold chief minister post in northern province of srilanka. pillayan is one partner of Mahinda Rajapakse government. definitely government involved with this blast. because general Janaka Perera was having a big publicity from Anuradapura rural peoples. so government could not hold it.that is why they kill janaka perera.finally this is a battle for power.this can happen anywhere in the world. what a same for country

"The Ltte is the best thing that ever happened for the Tamil people. GO TIGERS" You can stay in Canada and say that but I bet you will not trade places with the Tamil civilian who had his home blown up and is now been used as a human shield as cover by the LTTE from SL military bullets . There is a big difference between nationalism and genocide.

Many killed in Sri Lanka blast
The LTTE is a menace for a majority of Sri Lankans. Most of the governments that came to power found this civil war as fortune. A prominent part of Tamil speaking Hindus found the civil war as a getaway for a better life, blanketing themselves under European countries. It is sad that many people are misusing the minority’s grievance for their luxury life and throwing peanuts to a human to cause devastation to others – tragic.

Many killed in Sri Lanka blast
UNP which is represented by Janaka Perera has lost many leaders. President Premadasa was killed by a suicide bomber. Current leader Ranil Wickramasinghe stepped down to give way to Gamini Dissanayake. He also was killed by LTTE making way Ranil Wickramasinghe to gain the leadership back. His deputy Gamini Athukorala died mysteriously. Janaka Perera was a newly emerging leader in the party but ended his political career prematurely. Ranil Wickramasinghe remains the leader. Very fishy.
