US drone raid 'kills' al-Qaeda man

Pakistani television channels have reported that Rashid Rauf, a British national with al-Qaeda links, has been killed by a US missile attack in the North Waziristan tribal region of Pakistan.

Geo News and AryOneWorld channels reported on Saturday that Rauf, along with an Egyptian fighter, was among five victims of an attack launched by an unmanned US drone aircraft.

Intelligence officials in the region, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the Reuters news agency that Rauf, who escaped from custody outside an Islamabad court last December, had been killed.

They named the dead Egyptian as Abu Zubair al-Masri.

Pakistani officials said on Saturday that the aerial bombardment targeted a house near Mir Ali, a small town in North Waziristan.

Raids stepped up

"The strike destroyed a militant hideout in the village of Alikhel in North Waziristan," a senior security official told the AFP news agency.

Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder, reporting from Pakistan, said: "[There is] speculation today in the local media that Rauf was killed in that attack."

But he added that the raid happened in a remote area and that reporters could not easily establish what happened.

"There will be question marks unless there is credible evidence that this man was [indeed] killed," our correspondent said.

He said the raid inside the Pakistani territoty came "at a time when there is considerable anger and protestations not just from the civilian government but even the military".

The US military has increased the number of raids against suspected al-Qaeda and Taliban bases in recent months, some of which have killed civilians.

Suspect

The latest raid comes days after Abdullah Azzam al-Saudi, a senior member of al-Qaeda, was killed along with six others in a suspected US missile strike in northwest Pakistan.

Al-Saudi was supected by Washington of being the main link between al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters in Pakistan.

Most of the US raids against suspected opposition fighters have been carried out by pilotless drones.

The Pakistani government has spoken out against regular air raids by the US, saying that they alienate the population.

Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan's president, said recently that Islamabad will not tolerate any compromise to the country's sovereignty.

How It Works (or) What a Bunch of Idiots
When the United Hates of America has killed all its enemies around the world, and when it has killed all the people it thinks are its enemies, and when it has killed all the people who just happened to be killed along the way, and when it has killed all the people who died as indirect victims of all these killings, then we shall all have peace and tranquility and live happily ever after, and America will have no enemies, because they will all be dead, and every living person will love America.

right, why is that?
That is a good question. Why is it that so many – vast majority – of the posts from Canada are so US bashing??? Our roots are similar. Geographically we share a huge border. They are our largest trading partner – for both exports & imports (China is #2 and Mexico #3). Personally I’ve always perceived Canada as an ally and simply a friend. WHY is this??

Do not play games
Had these fighters really been killed? It is a question mark. Pakistan is the country that has dominion in doiminion in dominion. USA is using every kind of armed equipments, but practically the war on terror has no end, while it is stretching. It is better to shun the hate of past episodes, and make negotiations with rivals of every kind, and make the world a safer place to live in.

US saved Muslims from Nazis?
Dear Karl, Would you please be so kind to elaborate, with historical facts, what Muslims were saved from Nazis? If US and EU helped Kosovo from breaking away was definitely to restore deteriorating image of US-led allied forces in Iraq as well as image of NATO and ISAF in Afghanistan. That's what I can see for now. Real reasons will be known in near future but I can't see a single Muslim being saved from Nazis as WW2 was fought away from any Muslim majority areas.

Hate
I have read many statements of hate and how the USA is this or that, well, I am sorry to say that the USA is far more than just the administration that runs It. Furthermore, when"we the people" don't like are choice, we change it! as we have just done. However, we must of course place our trust in our government to do what is right and best for us. We are not blind to the truth, we are not happy, but we have spoken and change is coming. To those who still want to hurt us: hurt only themselves.

Drone kills
Everybody rejoices at the death of a terrorist, who has nothing better to do than blow up innocent people. Oh, Canada, would like to think America enjoys killing "our enemies". We freed Muslims from the Nazis, we freed Muslims in Kosovo, our enemies are these same Muslims who have lost their way, and really enjoy killing innocents of any nation, creed, or culture. Read what happend in India today? Will Canadians condemn the Indian reaction?

Let the evils terrorize
The question whether the Al Qaidea are terrorists or not is simple, they have murdered hundred thousands of Tajiks and Hazaras in Afghanistan by the time they were ruling 90% of Afghanistan and terrorized millions. they continued to terrorize the whole world until they received a response. these blood thirsty people are just in the next door waiting to get chance and bite back at Afghanistan and terrorize its people,

i am a Muslim and i know that killing of innocent is prohibited in Islam, and if so Called Al qaeda exists and it had carried out Sep 11 then they are not muslims at all, but i don,t belive that they really are. its just a name used by Super powers to enjoy their monopoly over Muslims. i just wanna know that when people in Afghanistan don,t want America their why are they not leaving? and if any American tell me that if they hate terrorism then why are backing Israel.
