Saakashvili defends S Ossetia war
Saakashvili said he acted after hearing Russian tanks and troops were pouring into South Ossetia [AFP]

Mikheil Saakashvili, Georgia's president, has defended his country's military assault on breakaway South Ossetia in August, saying Russian forces had invaded Georgia and its citizens were in danger.

Addressing a parliamentary commission investigating the war on Friday, he said: "We learned that Russian troops were moving through the Roki tunnel and had crossed the Georgian state boundary.

"I could not believe they would cross that red line... I could not believe they would be first to take this step.

"Our answer to the question whether we have undertaken military action is 'Yes', we took the decision to undertake military action."

The president, who has come under fire from opponents who accuse him of walking into a war that Georgia could not possibly win, said: "It was a difficult decision, but it was an inevitable one. Any democratic government would take the same decision, to protect its citizens."

Russian denial

Months of skirmishes between separatists and Georgian troops erupted into war in August when Georgia sent troops and tanks to retake the pro-Russian region of South Ossetia, which threw off Tbilisi's rule in 1991-92.

Moscow responded with a powerful counter-strike that drove the Georgian army out of South Ossetia.

Russian troops then pushed further into Georgia, saying they needed to prevent further Georgian attacks.

The West condemned the advance as a "disproportionate response".

In October, Russia pulled its troops back inside South Ossetia and Abkhazia, a second breakaway Georgian region, both of which Moscow has now recognised as independent states.

Russia blames Saakashvili for unleashing the conflict, but the Georgian president told the commission that Moscow was the aggressor.

He repeated previous statements that Tbilisi launched the full-scale assault on Tskhinvali, the South Ossetian capital, on the evening of August 7, having learned that Russian tanks and troops were pouring across the border and fearing for the safety of Georgian villages.

He said: "When we asked the Russians through the Americans what was the goal of their intervention, their answer was 'the complete destruction of Georgia'."

Saakashvili defends S Ossetia war Israeli style
Saakashvili said he acted after hearing Russian tanks and troops were pouring into South Ossetia Is this an American tale UK or I wonder, an EU line. Ops! A group in the Middle East master these kind of lines - they are sometimes referred to as IOF. They are the victims usually, with all the political and military muscle. This guy Mikheil Saakashvili is a war criminal.

Saakashvili defends S Ossetia war
Like the Iraqi government posturing as if it is a "Democratic" nation, Mikheil Saakashvili is another different form of what is now becoming word("Democratic") marked by wholesale death, racism and criminality that will come back to haunt the perpetrators of these socalled newly Democratic states. The brutal nature of Mikheil Saakashvili, is almost breath-taking. This guy is a coward who has no other equal with the exception of George W. Bush Inc.

As my Georgian Drive said ...
... Misha very good boy. Certainly better for GEO than Shevardnadze. BUT, I am stunned to see him claim that their attack was in response to Russian aggression. This is based on information from my associates on the ground in GEO. FYI – I was an advisor to GEO and we told them over and over again to kiss off their “lost territory” and focus on their economy. Ooops.

Two Sides?
This is not a story where you need to give equal voice to both sides Misha is lying baldly. Anyone who was paying attention when the Georgians attacked knows that the Russians didn't enter the Roki tunnel until the day following the Georgians' despicable night assault on S Ossetia's civilians. Why do you give credence to Georgian lies? If you are going to print these lies at least print the facts to: Georgia attacked Tskhinvali the night before the Russians entered the Roki tunnel, not after!

Putin prepared the invasion since months
All the specialists have predicted that Putin will attack Georgia in August 2008 - in July 15th 2008 Washington Post described in details the Russian invasion. The goal of Putin was to push out - eventually kill Sakhasvili , Putin told himself to Sarkozy - and to put a man of Moscow at Tbilissi. How it starts? It is not the main question because what everybody could see is that Russia is now occupying 20% of his territory, with military basis preparing the next attack in July-August 2009

Who started war in S.Ossetia
Many people blam Georgia for starting this war without acknowledging that it was not in Georgia's interest to start a war. Growing economy of Georgia was the best weapon against separatist leaders and was attracting population of S. Ossetia. This war damaged Georgia's economy, slowed down Georgia's integration in NATO, etc..

Russians planned invasion!?
If US launches a couple of rockets with nuclear heads into, say, Belarus, Russia will answer with a couple of hundreds. They both (US and Russia) have well developed plans of WW3. Do we blame them for this? No. It's just a geopolitics. They HAVE TO have such plans. As for Georgia, of course Russians knew what was going to happen and had a plan to handle the assault. FSB-KGB officers are not that stupid after all. It was a reasonable response for Russians for what Saakashvili did to Ossetians.
