Tunnels feed besieged Gaza

About 6,000 Palestinians are said to be engaged in smuggling through the tunnels [EPA]

Hundreds of tunnels under the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt are keeping many of the Palestinian territory's 1.5 million impoverished residents supplied with food and fuel.

On Saturday, Egyptian authorities found the entrances of three tunnels and confiscated a large amount of fuel about to be smuggled into the territory.

Sources say there are more than 6,000 Palestinians employed in the clandestine industry, which merchants say is heavily controlled by the Hamas authorities.

Strict rules are imposed on what can be brought in - weapons, drugs and people-trafficking are prohibited - and tunnel operators are taxed.

Ehab Gheissen, a spokesman for the interior ministry in the deposed Hamas-led government, said: "It is the right of the Palestinian people to do whatever they can to break the siege they live under.

"They have a right to do whatever they can to get what they need, including through tunnels, but at the same time we are watching all of the things that are being brought in."

Basic necessities

The tunnels were previously used to smuggle weapons to fight the Israeli occupation, but the blockade that was enforced after Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in 2007 has made the smuggling of basic supplies a necessity.

"They are used to bring in shoes, chocolate and 7-Up, things like that"

Sami Abdel Shafi, Gaza-based business analyst

Shortages have sent prices of flour and milk soaring, and the industry established around the tunnel smuggling system is now worth millions of dollars.

Sami Abdel Shafi, a Gaza-based business analyst, said: "These days, most of the anecdotal evidence we hear is that the tunnels are being used to bring in very human items, for lack of proper medicine in the Gaza Strip.

"They are used to bring in shoes, chocolate and 7-Up, things like that.

"Then again, all of the quantities being brought in are being blown out of proportion I feel, 1.5 million people deserve a lot more than having to operate under ground, they deserve a much better chance at operating an economy above ground."

Al Jazeera's Ayman Mohyeldin visited a nondescript warehouse in Rafah where one tunnel operator was waiting for merchants to pick up the goods that they had ordered.

A diverse range of items, such as cigarettes, teacups and spare parts for motorcycles, were among the items awaiting collection.

But no matter how important the tunnels are in keeping the Palestinian economy going, there is a human cost. At least 35 people have died in the tunnels since the beginning of the year, according to the UN.

General Mahmoud Khalaf, a military analyst, told Al Jazeera that the tunnels should not be seen as a lifeline for the Palestinians.

"These tunnels are not neccessary, and illegal procedures should not be used to transport goods," he said.

"The fact that these tunnels are seen as vital is an allegation perpetrated by Hamas to justify these actions. But yes, I do admit the Israeli-imposed siege has made life harder, but I believe these means are not the way forward."

Tunnel dangers

Abu Mohammed lost his son and a brother when the tunnel they were digging fell in on them. Since then, he has stopped his other children from going down the tunnels.

"What can we do? We have to eat and they were making money for the family. But now, I won't allow them to work no matter how poor we are. It's just not right," he told Al Jazeera.

Egypt is under pressure from Israel to crack down on the tunnels, some of which are in sight of the border police.

Cairo says it is making efforts to halt the trade, and the UN says that during a two-day period in August, 28 tunnels were destroyed by the authorities.

Mohyeldin reported that some Palestinians even boast that the Egyptians will never be able to shut all the tunnels because it is also a lucrative trade for many Egyptians.

But Abdel Shafi warns that longer the tunnels remain a lifeline, the more it will undermine the chances of a proper Palestinian economy being developed.

"It will have catastrophic consequences in the long term, even if it does provide or alleviate some of the need for the moment," he said.

"The Gaza Strip cannot be sustained on the operations of the tunnels."

In Gaza, 85 per cent of the population relies on aid and unemployment is running at 45 per cent.

How low a country can go in its slavish behaviour to destroy tunnels, especially when they are used to feed Palestinians and bring them medicine.

The Israeli blockade must be lifted and the actions for making this blockade in the first place must be condemned.

The whole system is a joke
here we have palestinians who are trying to survive as a result of laws enforced by the israelis and not contested by the UN or arab nations in any significant form. Yet their struggle to survive is being rediculed as terrorist activity. Who cares about the future economy of palestine when people at this present time are struggling for basic necessities. No doubt it is important but so is the life of these individuals who are struggling day in day out for such amenities that we take for granted!

Bring in "Food", aha
the "Food" they bring in is used in explosives in their terribly outrageous suicide attacks, what do you expect out of a country that is surrounded by countries trying to destroy it? your suggestion to us would probably be to move to a different place, but your real problem is that G-O-D gave us this land and so it will be for good your Koran says to too, tough truth, eh?

This is one of the most horrific stories i have heard about from Palestine.Digging tunnels to bring in food and medicine .They have made whole region into giant prison and world does nothing about it and probably calls people who dig tunnels terrorists . As long as situation in Palestine is as it is all the talk about peace from UN and anyone else means nothing i am ashamed to be human at this day and age .

Well the Israelis have finally seeking revenge for what happened to them under Hitler. They have created a Ghetto to hold, debase, humiliate, dehumanise and torture a whole people... Sounds like a... CONCENTRATION CAMP!!! I am no anti-Semite however, what the Israeli state is perpetrating in the Gaza Strip is no less that a crime against humanity and any one complicit in the support of the Israeli state via its direct financial or military suppot is also comitting a crime against humanity.

How is it that the highly educated ``chosen`` race is undergoing so much struggle just to maintain the semblance of humanity. Reading and writing and spelling and history and mathematics are all important only if it serves to make your students human. Unfortunately, it is producing learned monsters, skilled psychopaths & educated Eichmanns. Where are the proponents of justice and fairness?! Where is the compassion?! For how long can one expect to be humiliated and treated worse than a stray dog?

The "Israeli-imposed siege" is illegal and unfortunately international law does not apply to the US, UK and Israel. Every beating, shooting, killing by the Israelis is done with the blessing of both the US & UK governments. To take away all hope from a people & then label them terrorists is abhorrent. This is ethnic cleansing 21st Century style – oh we’ll kill em slow...and make it look good...the Israelis are in effect Nazi’s in disguise – the only thing they don’t do is shout “Heil Hitler”!!

Lost in all of this is how the Gaza leadership shamelessly exploits thier civillians for their own self interest. Recognize the "entity" and declare your willingness to abide by previous agreements. People who care about Gaza wake up!!! Demand Hamas accountability to her people. Medicine and Food over Jihad!!

The stability of the whole world is being held to ransom by the zionists in Israel. No one will have peace not Jew not Arab nor any of us without Justice. The leaders of Israel and the Arab world MUST come to a just agreement. We must drag them kicking and screaming to the table and make them be reasonable.

Gaza Tunnels
It is a shame to see what is happening in Gaza and almost no Arab ,Muslem, United Arab league, or the association of Muslem countries lift a finger to denounce, protest, and alleviate the suffering of the Gazans. I wonder waht happened to common sense, how can you call these people in Gaza terrorists, they have been under occupation by the Zionists since 1967. Do not insult me by saying that Isarel withdrew from Gaza, Israel control water, sea electricity, roads and the sky of Gaza.Shame on Arabs.

tunnels
Interesting that these tunnels existance were long denied. Israel has long said they existed and were used to smuggle arms, terrorist supplies and terrorist themselves. Attempts to close the entrances were called attacks and their existence was denied. Now that they are exposed they are called life-lines... I find this a most interesting approach to avoid truth.

Don´t be funny - 90% is still weapons
They get 75% of the electricity and almost 100% of fuels from Israel through the check points, and also food&medicine. The tunnels are and were used to bring weapons - otherwise where all these Hamas weapons and explosives are from - after 8 years of "Intifada" and 1.5 years of siege? Btw, is the sige legal or not is a big question. I don´t know whether or not there is a country, whose major political party calls for the elimination of its neighbor and defines it a a "holy mission". Ask Hamas.

Palestine response to Edo
The last time I looked at my Bible, God (Allah) (IAMWHOAM) promised the land of Palestine to the descendants of Abraham. Both Israelites and Arabs trace their lineage to Abraham, so it is God's will that both live in the land. Jews, Muslims and Christians all believe there is only One God. Therefore, logically, we all believe in the same God, since there is only One. We humans make Him into different "gods" but there is only One. God is One we are not. To live in disunity dishonors our God.

Good Report
One can say a lot about the emotional impact these tunnel-resistances have. However, I look at it from another point of view. This report shows, proves, and ask for an action about the suffering of Gazza people. It shows who extreme is their life. It proves serious is Israili siege which has made Gazza into a prison. It asks the people, the governments, the UN to take an action. Good report.

Gaza tunnels
What is Israel afraid of that it would not embrace their brothers? Jews, Christians and Muslims are all heavily related. I worked with exclusively Muslims for years and I find their religion fascinating, though I did not convert. I work with Jews, and I find them to be good people too. For many years, Ireland has attempted to support the Palistinians and other groups who are under the thumb. WE were for 800 years under the thumb of the British, but we don't hate them. Start again people.

The cry of Israel of the right to return to "their land" is based on Biblical myth. The image we in the West have of a besieged people that have returned and made an empty desert bloom isn't true, as Palestinian families have farmed the productive land that Zionists have stolen from them for eons before Jewish settlers arrived with promises of subsidized housing built on the rubble and the blood of their Arab brothers of the same God. Shame on Israel!

What goes around comes around
Whats all this Israeli hate stuff. A small issue of Hamas rocket fire, Gilad Shalit. and you know all the rest. closing the borders is a result of these actions (as if you didn't know) Eventually,if the present respite continues borders WILL open, and with that, as long as the ruling Palestinian government can keep the local hooligans under control, respect and humanitarianism will return to Gaza.

Gaza tunnels
Those who blame the Palestinians, for attacks on Israelis don't understand the situation. For 60 years (85 years if one counts the British Mandate period) Israel has been encroaching into Palestinian lands, destroying villages, farms and homes, killing people who have legally dwelled on their land for millenia. Israel is the illegal aggressor with enormous military power. Palestinians are responding to theft of their land. See UN Resolution 242 and Camp David and Oslo accords

A bit of political history
kk & Roger B W, too right, but Just remember when Israel was returning the Sinai, one condition was that they (Israel) take the "Hot Potato" Ghaza off of Egypts hands. Egypt has no interest in getting involved in any responsible way. Would your country like to have Ghaza?

Tunnels in Gaza
This article sadly states only a fraction of the tear-jerking condition our Ghazanian Muslims are facing. The tunnels are their final resort to their inhumane living conditions, and what is so wrong with the smuggling of petrol instead of using cooking oil as a means of fuel?! The Jews shouldn't worry about the smuggling of weapons, they have enough of their own donated from all four corners of the world. Oh and don't forget their nuclear weapons, the one Shimon Peres doesn't bother to refute!

Of course the israeli-palestinean conflict is quite circular. Each side justifies its actions on the actions of the other. In every case, both sides lose. This article made me wonder whether profiting by the tunnel trade and generally elevated social status of militancy, encourages the endless firing of rockets at israel. It would seem to me that those militants have the most to lose by any subsiding of the violence. Perhaps the same perverse incentives exist on the israeli side as well
