Inside USA - Christianity, politics and power
The US is a deeply religious country.

Ninety-two per cent of Americans believe in God, 78 per cent identify themselves as Christians and more than a quarter as evangelical Christians.

For almost three decades, the Christian right in the US has wielded considerable power in the political arena.

Religious leaders like Jerry Falwell, James Dobson and Pat Robertson targeted the Republican party as a vehicle to advance their agenda - a push to shape US law and policy on a range of issues - stem cell research, same sex marriage, abortion.

In return, they offered the Republicans a mobilised voting block.

In a political system that is based so heavily on organised lobbying, money and conservative populism, it was a marriage made in heaven.

The big question in 2008 - will Republican candidate John McCain be able to harness that voting block in the same way George Bush did?
